30 years of working in the field of counseling and psychotherapy have affirmed for me that the relationship formed between therapist and patient is the key to therapy's ability to promote healing. It's basic elements are mutual respect, unconditional positive regard, empathic understanding and the desire to grow and change. In psychotherapy there are many theoretical foundations and techniques. Within these different frameworks healing occurs through insight and action.
Psychotherapy is a creative and collaborative process. It allows you to share your thoughts and feelings in a supportive and comfortable setting. It promotes resourcefulness through self examination. Therapists are trained to understand how human nature and life experience can shape behavior. Therapy is an opportunity to make different choices in order to change your life for the better.
Examining personal strengths and struggles provides direction to treatment. Once you identify your goals you can decide how gently or aggressively to pursue them. Honesty and perseverance are some of the attributes that create change. A therapist can walk beside you on your journey as a sounding board and a resource. Ultimately the decisions you make are your own.
